International Day of Flamenco

International Day of Flamenco

Today, 16 November, is the International Day of Flamenco. In Andalucía it is celebrated wholeheartedly, especially in Jerez, the other population centres and in Ronda.

The history of the Flamenco art form

It is thought that the flamenco genre emerged at the end of the 18th century in cities and agrarian towns of Baja Andalucía. Jerez de la Frontera is regarded as the origin of this music, poetry and dance “art”, although there is practically no data to confirm this.

There are hypotheses that point to the influence on flamenco of types of dance from the Indian subcontinent – the place of origin of the Romany people – such as the Kathak dance. But also Gurumbé, songs from your black memory, shows the African influence on the rhythms and choreographies of flamenco.

Flamenco events in Ronda

The programme of events started on Saturday night with “Lorca, Poeta Flamenco”, a flamenco spectacle based on the poetry of Federico García Lorca.
This was a fantastic 90 minutes of flamenco: Miguel Lorca and his students entertained the audience with dance, while singers Ainhoa Pérez and Ana Cristina Mata sang and clapped vigorously. The whole was held together by a trio of outstanding musicians: Curro Bautista on grand piano, Roberto Spanó on guitar and Jesús Urda on drums.

What a great night out! (I know! I was there!)
