At these strange times, when we are all locked down at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the world, it’s important to plan future projects to enjoy the long-awaited freedom that we have deprived ourselves of for a while.
Because life must go on after confinement, the La Donaira estate (Montecorto, Málaga), together with the El Gastor (Cádiz) and Montecorto town halls, will celebrate the II edition of the La Donaira Mountain Eco-Marathon on November 21 with the motto ‘Let’s run to save the environment’.
New for this edition, as well as the main 42 km trail, there a route of 19 km and 900 metres of positive elevation and a Mini Children’s Marathon will be held in parallel in Montecorto (Málaga).
“We want to help raise awareness of environmental protection through sport, and for this, all citizens must be involved. Sports values are important to instil from childhood, we have to offer children the possibility of feeling that they are fighting for something. And to the not-so-sportsmen, show them that exercise is a beneficial September, and even more so when it is done in contact with nature, ”says Jorge Sánchez, technical director of the La Donaira trail.
The II edition of the La Donaira Mountain Eco-Marathon will be 42 km with a positive level of 2000 metres. The start and finish are from Montecorto (Málaga) at commencing at 8.30 am. on November 21.
Since the sports event was created in 2019 the idea was to join forces between towns, and to involve all the inhabitants of the area. “Sport is becoming increasingly organised in the towns. The union is strength, and we want the inhabitants of Montecorto and El Gastor to feel that they are twinned by sport and nature, “says the mayor of Montecorto, Lidia Escalante.
The mountain event is one of the few races in Andalucia that offers cash prizes for the winners: 1st Prize – 400 euros, 2nd Prize – 200 euros and 3rd Prize – 100 euros. And it will also award medals for all those who finish the Eco-Marathon, Trail and Mini Children’s Marathon.
The registration period will open in September 2020 through the website https://www.contrarreloj.es/es/, and 100% organic cotton t-shirts and backpacks will be delivered to all registered runners.
“The Mountain Eco-Marathon registered historical places such as the Dolmen del Gigante, natural spaces such as the Montecorto pine forest and the Malaver pit within the term of the La Donaira eco-retreat, the La Dehesa Biodynamic estate, and the balcony of the white villages of Cádiz, El Gastor”, said the gastoreña mayor María Isabel Moreno. This initiative, which is carried out between the two neighboring municipalities and the La Donaira estate, also has the institutional support of the Provincial Government of Cádiz and that of Málaga. Running for a common good is a benefit for everyone, and more for the environment.
