The President of the Malaga Provincial government has urged Spain’s Minister of Tourism to meet with the sector to design the measures and aid “as soon as possible” and announces the creation of a committee of experts of “indisputable” prestige to develop a new strategic and action plan for the province.
The Malaga Provincial Council considers it a priority to carry out a joint strategy, in which businessmen and all municipalities participate, under the Costa del Sol brand, to reactivate the province’s tourism sector in the face of the serious crisis caused by the Covid-19 coronavirus.
To address the serious situation of the sector and to take measures, the president of the Diputación de Málaga and Turismo Costa del Sol, Francisco Salado, organised a videoconference meeting with mayors and tourism officials from the main tourist towns of the province, such as Malaga, Marbella, Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Estepona, Nerja, Mijas, Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga, Antequera, Ronda, as well as the two municipalities of the Costa. Members of the permanent Costa del Sol Tourism commission have also attended, such as Luis Callejón, Miguel Sánchez, José Prado, as well as the CEO, Margarita del Cid, and the manager, Antonio Díaz.
Salado has defended that it is necessary to coordinate all the actions that are undertaken to promote the tourism sector of the province under the umbrella of the Costa del Sol brand, “a brand that brings together the entire province, powerful and consolidated, that we have to reactivate all united, we must join efforts, not each go their own way ”. In this sense, new meetings will be held.
“There are no political acronyms,” he added, “in defence of the interests of the Costa del Sol, something fundamental for the Malaga and Andalucian economy and for thousands of families who depend directly or indirectly on the activity of the tourism sector.”
Likewise, Francisco Salado has stated that it is necessary to be very selective, initially betting, in the short term, on the national market; and medium and long, by international markets, although analysing case by case and using all the resources of the intelligence department of markets and new technologies of Turismo Costa del Sol for this. “It is essential,” he said, “to be very well positioned and soon The first ones, so we have to have a new action plan and redirect economic resources. ”
For this, Salado has announced the creation of a team of experts, some belonging to international organizations and with undisputed prestige in the tourism sector, in which representatives of the public and private sectors help, with their contribution and experience, to prepare a new strategic and action plan for the Costa del Sol, with the participation of all municipalities. In this regard, it has been suggested that the great strengths of the Costa del Sol should be used as a destination, such as its safety, its health services, its infrastructures and its gastronomic and nature offer, among other aspects.
During the meeting, which lasted for about two hours, Salado reported that Turismo Costa del Sol will be a spokesperson for the claims and needs of the sector and of the municipalities before the central government and the Andalucian Government, as well as urged the central government to hold as soon as possible the meetings announced with the sector, communities and main destinations by the Minister of Tourism.
Likewise, pending the measures that may be approved by the central government, Turismo Costa del Sol has offered itself as a single window to process and request aid to alleviate the effects of the crisis. Likewise, it has been pointed out that it is also necessary to coordinate the possible municipal aid that can be offered.
