The well-known Spanish supermarket company Mercadona has responded to the need of Food Banks during the COVID-19 coronavirus by donating almost 100 tons of basic products such as milk, oil, fish and children’s food.
Mercadona thus strengthens its relationship with the Food Banks of the region, with which it has been collaborating for years through the donation of products.
This action is in addition to other measures implemented by the Spanish supermarket chain with the aim of continuing to serve the most disadvantaged groups, such as donations to soup kitchens.
Pedro Mariscal, president of the Federation of Food Banks of Andalucia, said he wanted to “thank Mercadona for its solidarity with the Food Banks of Andalucia for the donations they are making.
“These are very difficult times when our activity is being seen. Our most sincere thanks go to the company and its workers for the collaboration they always show us, since it allows us to continue helping the most disadvantaged groups in these extraordinary circumstances and where donation is more necessary than ever.”
Mercadona collaborates with more than 210 soup kitchens and 60 food banks and other social entities throughout Spain and Portugal, to which it donates food daily and participates in food collection campaigns.
In 2019, the company donated a total of 9,218 tons of food to all of them, 9,100 in Spain and 218 in Portugal.
