The Emergency Plan for Flood Risk in Malaga has been activated, at Level 1, due to the heavy rainfall recorded in the capital of the province.
This level requires permanent communication with the Emergency Coordination Centre (CECEM 112) to keep abreast of the situation at all times and request the necessary support and resources from the regional government.
Until 10am this morning, the emergency telephone number 112 took around sixty calls from the public who warned of problems on public roads, cars stuck due to hail storms and flooding. This caused some traffic problems and delays in different parts of the city but, at the moment, there are no reports of any personal injuries.
In addition, the Municipal Emergency plans have been activated in Alhaurín de la Torre and Coín.
Orange severe weather alerts
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) keeps the orange warning for heavy rains with accumulated rainfall of 30 litres in one hour active in the province of Malaga (in the regions of Sol and Guadalhorce) until midnight.
Safety advice
Emergencies 112 Andalucia recommends removing furniture and objects from outside properties that can be washed away by floods to avoid accidents. It also advises not to park vehicles or camp in dry riverbeds, or at the riverside, to avoid being surprised by a sudden flood of water.
Motorists must exercise extreme caution and respect, as at any other time, the traffic rules and indications of the information panels of the General Directorate of Traffic, as well as never crossing by car through flooded places. If you encounter a small pool of water, you must cross it at a low speed and proceed very slowly so that the water does not splash the engine and stop it. Afterwards, it is advisable to check the proper functioning of the brakes.
You should not, even if you the route perfectly, drive along a flooded road or cross a bridge or underpass with water. The force of the current could drag the vehicle away. In addition, you should avoid travelling at night, since it is at this time that the dangers are more difficult to detect.
In the case of thunderstorms, it is advisable to close doors and windows to avoid air currents in houses and homes that can attract lightning. On the street, it should be taken into account that the shelter of buildings can protect you from the risk of discharges. You should never look for shelter, however, under trees. Small buildings, barns and sheds should also be avoided as should tents and convertible cars.
