Between biennials, great museums, film festivals and ancient heritage environments, the initiative of a town of just 400 inhabitants, nestled between the mountains of the Genal Valley and whose difficult road access was not finished paving until a couple of years ago. The Observatory of Culture offers each year an insight of the highlights of the sector throughout Spain and for the first time includes among its proposals the Art Encounters of Genalguacil in the list of Andalucian references.
Every other summer, during the first fortnight of August, a group of artists selected in advance develops a project in the locality, living with the neighbours and leaving afterwards their work as part of the local heritage. Over the past two decades, the Encounters have turned Genalguacil into a museum town that now receives a remarkable recognition from the best choice of the cultural sector.
Not surprisingly, the observatory conducted by the Contemporary Foundation is prepared from a survey sent to a thousand professionals in the cultural sector. The study values the main initiatives and enclaves of the country, while grading the cultural offer of Spanish cities.
In this last section, Malaga remains in the 2018 Observatory in the fifth position of the national list, after Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Valencia, which also maintain their respective places in terms of quality assessment and innovation of their cultural offers.
The Observatory prepares one national ranking and one by Autonomous Communities with the institutions and projects highlighted by the specialists consulted. The first local reference in the national list is the Picasso Museum in Málaga (in 16th place), followed by the Malaga Spanish Film Festival (31st), the Center Pompidou Málaga (42nd) and La Térmica (60th).
The best in Andalucía
The Picasso Malaga Museum is also the first chance of Malaga in the Andalusian list, which is in the second position. The third is for the Malaga Festival, which is followed by the Russian Museum Collection, which wins a position until the fifth place on the list. The Pompidou CentreMálaga (6th), the CAC Málaga (11th) and the Carmen Thyssen Museum (14th) precede the Genalguacil Art Encounters, placed in the fifteenth position on the list next to the Cervantes Theatre.
Among the curiosities of the observatory related to last year, for the first time there are among the highlights a song record (‘El mal querer’ by Rosalía) and two films: Entre dos Aguas’ by Isaki Lacuesta and ‘Campeones’ by Javier Fesser.
